Alpen - Trail 2011: Marte Heilemann again CHAMPION!

Alpen-Trail: Marte Heilemann, Oslo Norwayhelmut-dietz-photo: Marte Heilemann did it again! Only a baby break could stop her winning the Alpen-Trail last season.

Marte competed in this year's Alpen - Trail sled dog Alpine stage race also again two former Pirena Champions (due to lack of snow, Pirena will be held later, if). The Pirena Champs ended at place two and six.

Surprising results for Helmut Peer. Austria's routine musher could win the last two stages at Sexten, both starting with the spectacular massstart in the valley. Peer was the shooting star at the Alpen - Trail 2011 and ended up at place three.

"Real" Alpentrailers Lutz Binzer and Volkmar Stuber could be found at place 4 and 5.

In the six - dogs - class the Norwegian musher Bjørn Lyng Pedersen was dominating the race from the beginning and had an advantage of 48 minutes against the German mushers Sylvia Ulrich and 52:30 minutes against Thorsten Ballas.

Norwegian mushers are in good shape this season. We'll see some more this winter at several IFSS Sled Dog World Championships in their home country (sprint - mid distance - long distance).

Alpen-Trail - Multi Champion Heini Winter (Augsburg) scratched at the last stage in Sexten. Hopefully his guardian angel kept an eye on him!

We also would like to wish Erwin Föger best recovery. The Tyrolean Alpen - Trail musher had to leave the race because of illness.

Again the Alpen-Trail did show, why it's called the "most beautiful sled dog race in the Alpes"! Trails very good and sun was shining - as (almost) each year ...

Nordic Breeds: Femundlopet/IFSS WC Long Distance 2011

Femundlopet 2011/IFSS World Championship Long Distance (Nordic Breeds): Karsten GroenasThe Femundlopet 2011, which will be also the IFSS Sled Dog World Championship Long Distance 2011, there are really the best of the best mushers competing. Mainly from Norway.
It will also give a special title for "Nordic Breeds". For Femundlopet 600 there are 6 Nordic Breed teams registered. But there is no doubt, which will be the favourites: the 72 years old Karsten Grönås from Sweden (see photo) and his Siberian Huskys. More here:

Will Norwegian musher Trond Hansen be his closest competitor? See them here: Team Trond Hansen

13-Isabelle-TravadonThere are a lot more "Nordic Breeds" dog teams registerd for Femundlopet 400: 24 teams from 9 nations. 16 of them are rookies! Hard to say which are the favourites. But the mushers who once finished the race are sure in advantage.
Isabelle Travadon from France (see photo) is one of the Nordic Breed mushers. She is an experienced musher and finished also Finnmarkslopet (F 1.000 km!) last year. More here:

Femundlopet/IFSS WC Long Distance: Rachael arrived!

Rachael Scordis (USA) arrived yesterday in Röros, Norway to prepare and participate at IFSS Sled Dog World Championship Long Distance 2011 (Femundlopet - F400).

Rachael was about 5 years ago media's darling when the pritty female musher finished the "toughest race on earth" - IDITAROD. Rachael is blind, Tim Osmar supported her as trail - translater ...

We met Rachael last year in Røros and spend almost a whole night together with her and some more fans waiting for mushers crossing the finish line at Femundlopet 2010.

Guess she will attract some media interest at Femundlopet too ... at least our's.

"Good luck, Rachael!"

Femundlopet/IFSS WC Long Distance 2011

helmut-dietz-photo: Femundlopet "around" Røros in Norway is probably the biggest long distance sled dog race in the world (in number of participating dog teams)

Officially 83 twelve dog teams are registered for Femundlopet 600 and even 144 eight dog teams at Femundlopet 400.

In total 227 long distance dog teams with 2.149 active sled dogs. Even Alaska might never have seen a race with as many dog teams as Femundlopet 2011.

Among them a huge number of well known champion mushers - even IDITAROD winners. There are in both classes/distances as many participants and potential winners as in no other internationbal sled dog competition in the whole world of sled dog racing.

Nevertheless the Femundlopet is one of the most authentic events in the sport of sled dog racing.

Read their Femundlopet rules HERE

They say ...

"All participants are equally important and shall receive the same level of service throughout the race." - "amateur" and "professional" mushers ...

"The Femund Race is a long distance race that measures the skills and strategies of the dog team and the musher without any outside assistance other than what the organiser has decided."

"Mandatory equipment
It is mandatory to have the following equipment ... in the sled during the whole race. ... will be controlled at the check points and at the finishing line:
Relevant maps ...
Water boiler with a container sufficient to heat a minimum of 0.5 litres of water per dog. ...
Magned compass
Proper snow spade
Axe or large knife ...
Sleeping bag for extreme conditions ...
Extreme wind bag ...
Fuel burner ...
Extra clothes with both inner and outer garments, socks and shoes or other footwear.
First aid equipment
Head light and batteries
Light stick, signal pistol or rescue light ...
8 socks per dog out from each check point ...
Emergency supplies of dog food ...
... food supplies for him/hersef for min. 24 hours."

"All feeding and care of dogs shall happen outdoors and only be carried out by the musher. Only cold water may be fetched for preparing dog food."

No wonder, a certain part of Femundlopet is called "Little Alaska" (Grimsbu/Folldal), the fridge of Norway.

Femundlopet - IFSS WC Long Distance 2011 - Trail

Your plan:
3.2.2011: Start of F600 teams
4.2.2011: Start of f400 teams
... maybe try to see some of them again at Femund Lake - but it depends on snow and own fitness ...
4.2.2011: Visit Checkpoint Sorvollen
5.2.2011: Visit Checkpoint Grimsbu and Trail at Folldal, maybe also walking up to the treeless mountains (depending on snow and ...)
6.2.2011: Driving back to Røros, maybe see some teams at checkpoint Tynset and Tolga - and hopefully be in time at Røros to see the winners crossing the finish line and walking at the trail towards incoming teams.
Spend the night at the finish line to welcome the finishers.
7.2.2011: Waiting for the last incoming teams to honour their efforts
8.2.201: ... may be waiting for the red latern teams. Evening together with mushers at the award ceremony ...

Should be again an exciting trip to the dogs & "Lille Alaska"!

Finnmarkslopet-Start: Nina-Skramstad

helmut-dietz-photo: Nina Skramstad, one of the most friendly mushers from Brandbu (about 50 km north from Oslo) is just leaving Alta for her 1.000 kilometer adventure with her dog-team to Kirkenes and back ...

Nina told us today something about her dogs ...

Nina mentioned her 12 Femundlopet dogs and will have two additional dogs to complete her Finnmarkslopet 2011 team. She didn't say, but we realized, that Femundlopet is important for the best European long distance mushers, but Finnmarkslopet is the main event in each season.

Delta (photo) is special ...

Nina Skramstad's Nina picked out one dog, which is very special: Delta. With her she has a close relationship full of confidence to each other. Delta is able to run the whole Finnmarkslopet distance in lead - mainly in single lead. See Delta's relatives here: Delta's pedigree

Nina Skramstad's dog team for Femundlopet 600:
Main leaders: Delta (2005), Nettie (2005), Jessie (2006), she is new in her team and has done Iditarods & 4xF600), Guffen (2005), Doffen (2005)
Leaders: Lusa (2008), Loppa (2008), Kelvin (2009) & Johann (2009) - from own litter
Fourwheelers: Knik (2002), Hauk (2007)
Team dog: Makro (2009) own bred.

Nina's dogs are mainly black with one exception. They will wear pink sneakers (booties) from and pink harnesses from to raise money and increase the awareness for breast cancer research.

Six of the twelve Femundlopet 600 dogs also did Finnmarkslopet 1000 last year.

The strenght of her teams are hard trails and running fast. The Weakness are steep trails, they are slower then. Nina said. But we guess this is rather true for all dog teams ...

Nina also mentioned the outstanding ancestors of her dogs, like
Louise and Marius (Bjørnar Andersen),
Delta-Amigo (Reitan),
Jeppedalen´s Sas (Robert Sørlie),
Takk (Golden Harness Award, Iditarod 2003) ...

Nina's Team (beside the dogs):
Elin Berntsen, dog handler for 5th year in a row.
Didrik Lindeberg Sand, musher & dog handler

helmut-dietz-photo: Elin Berntsen with Nina's mam training the dogs before Finnmarkslopet 2010 at Alta River.

May be we'll also see Nina's personal photographer (& driver) again: Ole-Johnny Myhrvold.

Hamar: Norwegian Championship 2011

Dominiks-Steckdose See the results of this weekend here:
Hamar: Norwegian 2011
Highly competitive 4-dogs- & 8-dogs-starter-fields. No Open Sprint Class. Unlimited Mid Distance: the German favourite for any kind of race in Open Class with huge advantage.

Is there a change to longer distances in open class or is it just a smart training run ...

But could also be a reaction to the market development: Mid and Long Distance is growing, Sprint is loosing dog teams ...
