ESDRA European Championship 2012 off-snow, Christianslust (Burg, Germany)

ESDRA EC 2012 off-snow: helmut-dietz-photo-2012

A trip to the ESDRA European Championship 2012 (Off-snow) to North Germany in the middle of the Christianslust forest was a short, but intensive photo-shooting session. See a few pictures by clicking the above photo, or here:

Impressions of ESDRA EC 2012 off-snow

One of the pictures was also published at

... and was choosen as one of the pictures of the day. More than 2.000 views within a short period of time did again show the high interest in the exotic sport of mushing - also off-snow "mushing". The picture featured the "QUEEN" of the European Championship off-snow 2012: Hege Ingebrigtsen, Norway and her NARVIK EXPRESS dog team. Hege won the EC title for 6-dogs-class and also for 8-dogs-class!

After our trips to Norway within the last three winters, to Femundlopet and Finnmarkslopet long distance sleddog races, we experience each time when we visit sprint events a new (almost forgotten) world. The dynamic of the dogs is incredible and there is always a good possibility to shoot great pictures - even when the dark forest makes it a little more difficult. At least compared to the treeless area of e.g. Finnmarksviddä ...

But the dynamic dogs cannot hide, that the number of participants get less and less (for the nome style classes) and that the organisation is also less "dynamic" compared to the long distance events with there exemplary informations using the modern media (starterlists, results, reports, photos, videos, musher informations etc.).

Nevertheless, international championships are always great to see the officials of the associations (mainly the same people since decades) and mushers and their dogs from many, many countries. It's great to meet people you know for many years, but also to meet people you haven't met before.

... to celebrate the champions and to encorage athletes who didn't win or didn't meet their personal best.

At the end it was worth the effort. We hope this is true for all participants and people who managed the event.

Barbara Wirz - SUI - ESDRA European Champion 4-dog-class off-snow

European Champion in 4-dogs-class: Barbara Wirz, SUI

Barbara & Hege were winning all Nome-style titles. This is similar to long distance sled dog racing, where female mushers are more and more comquering the podest ...

The "trapper" image of the sleddog sport is more and more eroding. That's fine ...!
